rugs with character
Afghan "war" rug
Belouch, North western Afghanistan
1.3 m by 2.1 m
War rugs are a fascinating mix of traditional motifs and interpretations of the social and political scene of Afghanistan over the last 30 years . Resulting in an almost modernist pictorial art form.
These rugs show hulking great Russian tanks, Kalashnikovs and grenades strew across the field s of Afghanistan. Contained with in boarders of traditional motifs and with scattered amulets and good luck charms to keep the owner/ weaver safe.
This piece was collected in Mashad. A pilgrimage city in the East of Iran and finely woven with silky wool and hard wearing goat hair selvedges. Un questionably a unique and important piece of weaving.
