Shah savan, NW Iran

Mafrash, 1910-1920s

1.1 m by 1.4 m

Old Mafrash panel. Opened out to form a small mat or "poshti". These were originally designed to hold household effects and bedding. Which would be stacked around the temporary shelter at the summer pastures.

Made as part of a dowery and for use , rather than commercial sale. These mafrash are a real link to the Shah savan nomadic tradition and are no longer made.

All natural dyes. The designs show a strong Turkish influence.
