Shah Savan, NW Iran

Mafrash, 1910-1920s

1.1 m by 1.4 m

Mafrash are bags, used for transporting clothes and bedding during the Shah Savan annual migration from the plains to the mountains in the north west of Iran around Mount Savalan.

These would be woven by young girls and women for their dowries, using traditional designs handed down through generations and woven from memory!

Beautiful, natural dyes and hand spun wool. Opened up to form a small covering.
