rugs with character
Bakhtiari, Char Mahal Valley
Mid 20th century, 1950,
1.7 m by 1.1 m
Apprentice piece , woven by a young girl just learning the weaving art. Village weavers in the char mahal valley ,the Bakhtari heartland ,often use a more sophisticated town or city workshop design to practice on or adapt.
This piece show shows great character and fluidity and has a real surrealist feel.
The weaving in this area of Iran is done at home by women and has to fit in to the ebb and flow of family life in a rural setting. You can almost feel the different moods and concentration of the weaver as she picks up the weaving at various times over the many months it would take to weave this piece.
