rugs with character
Shah savan, NW Perssia
Late 19th/ early 20th century,
1.4 m by 2.9 m
Glowing natural colours and a tough fine weave are typical of older Shah savan weaving. The olive greens and indigo blue are particularly note worthy in this banded kilim.
It has lovely movement for such a simple design and subtle details to break up the alternating stripes.
Shah savan women are rightly admired for their Kilims and this is a beautiful example.
This would have formed part of an extensive dowery of rugs and trappings that all Shah savan women would make .
